ABOUT THIS EVENT: Step inside the living room of Navajo playwright, director and filmmaker Rhiana Yazzie for a conversation on her work as Artistic Director of Minneapolis’ New Native Theatre and her career as a groundbreaking theater and film artist. For more than a decade, Yazzie has championed the varied voices of the Native American community and, with New Native Theatre, created a space where any member of this community is welcome, regardless of their experience level. Moderated by Carla Fredericks, Executive Director of The Christiansen Fund, this intimate conversation will cover the current state of Native storytelling in the U.S. as well as Yazzie’s career.

ABOUT OUR GUEST:
RHIANA YAZZIE is a Steinberg award winning playwright, a director, a filmmaker and artistic director of New Native Theatre (Mpls/St. Paul). A citizen of the Navajo Nation, she’s been a Playwrights’ Center fellow multiple times (McKnight 2016/17 and Jerome 2006 & 2010). Her newest play is Nancy, a Native bio-perspective on Nancy Reagan, a sequel to Queen Cleopatre And Princess Pocahontas, a play commissioned by OSF and the Public Theater for the American Revolutions cycle. She has just completed her first feature film, A WINTER LOVE which will premiere at the Wairoa Maori International Film Festival in June.

ABOUT OUR MODERATOR: Carla Fredericks is the Executive Director of The Christensen Fund, which backs the global Indigenous Peoples movement in its efforts to advance the rights and opportunities of stewards of biocultural diversity. Ms. Fredericks’ core work has focused on realization of Indigenous Peoples human rights. She has served in several capacities, including providing core support to the UN Special Rapporteur on Rights of Indigenous Peoples for the entirety of her two terms, serving as of counsel to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in bringing their opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline to international fame, assisting the Maya peoples of Southern Belize in implementing the affirmation of their land rights, and developing a model for Indigenous-driven consent processes and remedy.
