What is a Story Circle?
A story circle is a gathering of people who share stories through written responses, small-group conversations and full-group shares.
I’m shy. Will I have to speak in front of a large group?
No. Participants will not be asked to speak in front of the large group unless they wish to do so. Participants will be asked to have conversations in small groups.
Can I bring a friend?
Sure! Just have them RSVP so we know who will be there.
Who else will be there?
Our teams are making best efforts to invite a group of individuals that are representative of the communities we live in.
What will I be asked to discuss?
Skilled facilitators will ask participants questions related to democracy, and ask for them to share their responses (in the manners detailed above). For example, “How would you define your community?” or “What does democracy mean to you?”
This conversation is about democracy. Does that mean we’ll be arguing about the upcoming election?
No, the objective of the story circle is to facilitate civil dialogue on topics related to democracy. Participants will not be asked to share or discuss their political party affiliations.
I have an accessibility consideration? How can I share that with you?
There is a section on the RSVP form where you can share any access needs. Our teams will make best efforts to accommodate them. If we are unable to do so, or we have follow-up questions, we will contact you directly.
How many participants will there be at the Story Circle?
We estimate that there will be anywhere from 20-30 participants at each story circle.
A playwright will be there listening to the conversation. Will my privacy be protected?
Yes. The playwright will not use any participant names in their play unless permission is granted in writing. The playwright is there for inspiration, not to defame or malign participants.
How long is the story circle and do I need to attend the full time?
This story circle will be 2 hours in length. We encourage participants to stay for the entire time, but accommodations can be made. Please indicate on the RSVP form if you have a scheduling accommodation you’d like us to consider.
What happens after the story circle?
The short answer: nothing. We’re grateful for your contribution. The longer answer: in the summer of 2024, Local Theater Company, Curious Theatre Company and Gunnison Valley Theatre Festival will present an evening of three short plays, each inspired by the story circles. You will be invited to attend.
