THE DEMOCRACY CYCLE

WE THE PEOPLE: THE DEMOCRACY CYCLE
Staged readings of three short plays inspired by three distinct communities followed directly by engagement events.
Written by Steven Cole Hughes, Kenya Mahogany Fashaw, Nick Malakhow

Boulder:
July 27, 6pm @ Canyon Theatre, Boulder Public Library Main Branch

Gunnison: August 1, 7pm @ The Taylor Studio Theatre

Denver: August 3, 7pm @ Curious Theatre Company

From a mobile home park in Boulder, to a jail cell in Denver, to an unlikely council gathering in Gunnison, the three Democracy Cycle short plays reflect the stories of distinct Colorado communities. Join us for staged readings of these work that ask: where can we find shelter—a home—in these turbulent times? The answer may not be as far as we think.

The Democracy Cycle is a project led by Local Theater Company in partnership with Gunnison Theatre Festival and Curious Theatre Company. In Season 13, we gathered community members in three areas—Boulder, Denver, and Gunnison—for civil dialogue on topics related to democracy and what it means to form a society. Each Story Circle, as they were called, included a playwright who listened to the conversation, and synthesized that material into a short play. Now, we are pleased to present an evening of all three short plays, back-to-back, in Boulder, Denver and Gunnison. Dates and venues will be announced in early June, 2024.

Gather with us as our skilled ensemble reflects the experiences of our thriving communities.

At a time when “security risk” is government code for “homosexual,” it will take courage for them to step out of the shadows and confront their past and future.

Stockade is generously co-sponsored by Sarah Pierce Martin.

Stockade was commissioned in 2021 by Local Theater Company with support from Lari and Tom Abraham.
