SEASON 11 SHOWS

Clown Lung
By Steven San Luis
Fall Local Lab, December 4, 2021 | 2pm
Rehearsal period: November 29-December 4, 2021
Boulder, CO

Clown Lung plays with the idea of “purposeful miscasting.” It is a play that utilizes drag to examine identity and explore the many ways to perform it. Each performer in Clown Lung portrays a number of characters who satirize and challenge “traditional” notions of binary gender. Often times, being queer in a straight world feels like you are putting on a costume every day that is two sizes too small. Clown Lung turns the world inside out: This time, everyone else is wearing the costume.

All roles are open to any gender expression, age, ability and ethnicity.

Performer 1: Boy, Jellyfish Boy
The character that Perform One plays is a boy-next-door type who finds himself in a world that’s too big for him. He does his best to roll with the punches and go with the flow. He was born crying and literally never stopped. Androgynous, queer, genderfluid, trans, nonbinary; The only grounded and steady character in the world.

Performer 2: Narrator, Customer, Tamer, Mother, Jellyfish Customer
Performer Two’s characters are each, in their own way, a mother. Either a woman in her 40s to 80s or a man who is wearing barely enough makeup to be considered drag.

Performer 3: Pizza Girl, Fortune Teller, His Girlfriend, Jellyfish Pizza Girl
Performer 3 is someone who can be typecast as the “manic pixie dream girl.” A girl-next- door character whose only purpose in a story is to be the girl who the main character can have a crush on. OR someone who would absolutely NEVER be typecast as the female love interest: Pro football player or rugged bad boy or schoolyard bully or male stripper, etc.

Performer 4: Boss of this Pizza Shop, Ringmaster, Woman in a Suit, Jellyfish Boss of this Pizza Shop
Performer 4 portrays a number of women who are in charge. They are wealth oriented business people whose identity is tied to their careers. Performer 4 should be able to portray the owner of a business in a way that prevents an audience from ever taking them seriously. If Jennifer Coolidge or Danny Devito played a strict boss.

Performer 5: Her Boyfriend, Lion, Son, Her Jellyfish Boyfriend
Performer 5 portrays characters who make an audience examine their notions of masculinity. Can be played by anyone from the heartthrob of a boy band to a femme queer kid trying too hard to pass as straight to the heartthrob of a girl band.

You Enjoy Myself
By Topher Payne
Spring Local Lab, Friday, April 22, 2022 | 7 pm
Rehearsal period: Monday, April 18 - Friday, April 22, 2022
Boulder, CO

Eileen
(60s, she/her) Heartfelt, good-humored, and a bit didactic. The self-appointed manager of any group she’s in. Attended a liberal arts college and, for a time, her entire life was a liberal art- a bucolic existence at a Vermont farmhouse as part of a contented throuple, following their favorite band on tour. But that was a long time ago. She eventually married, moved to the city, had a child, got a desk job, started shopping at Chico’s. Now she’s widowed, her child has long since moved out, and she’s begun to wonder what the next version of her life is going to be.

Judith
(50s, she/her) A transgender woman who uses stridency and wit as her sword and shield. When Eileen left everything at the farmhouse behind, Judith doubled down. Her daily existence hasn’t changed substantially since she was 25 years old.  She’s a bit of an emotional hoarder. A novelist- and a damn good one- who’s had a nasty case of writer’s block for a quarter century. Striking and engaging. You can’t help but let her talk.

Jasper
(early 30s, he/him) Eileen’s son. A professional bass player who gets hired to accompany singers on tour, so he might do three months of Lil Nas X, followed by three months of Faith Hill. He notably does not create his own music, and probably has no idea what that would sound like. His only constant is his girlfriend, Isabel, which was sweet at one time but now he treats her like home instead of like a person. Searching, dissatisfied, but hopeful. He’s introspection-avoidant, and inherited his mother’s desire for reinvention but not her focus.

Isabel
(early 30, she/her) A bartender with a BFA, she has two modes of operation: Jasper is home, which means she’s part of a couple and they perform the rituals of domesticity, or Jasper is on the road, which means she’s effectively single and doesn’t have to consider anyone but herself. Seven years of that pattern has resulted in nothing in her life appreciably advancing forward. Dreamy and off-kilter- she might be brilliant, but she’s never properly checked. Confrontational and quippy, an avid consumer of music and literature- she wants so very much to be passionate about something.

Cory
(early 30s, he/him) He did everything right- went to college, married an ambitious man who looked good in a cable knit sweater, got the Nancy Myers kitchen of his dreams… and none of it fit. He found the perfect monochrome palette and then longed for color. Now he’s divorced, and working with Isabel at the bar. Cory’s always been friends with the cool kids, but down to his bones is such a square. He wears the awesome vintage concert tee but it’s so clear he ironed it. He wants to be a radical queer, but marching in the streets is noisy and it’s hard to find a bathroom. He wants to be shaken up, be someone totally different, but also loved and embraced for exactly who he is.

She has seen what poverty, neglect, and abuse can do to a family and is determined to get herself and her little sister out and create a better future for the both of them. African American female

Brea (pronounced “Bray” for Breanna)
(she/her) A loud, effervescent 16-year-old. She is very popular at school and flirty with everyone. She loves her sister but doesn’t understand the computer stuff she is constantly working on. She wants her sister to open up and treat her like an equal, not as a younger sister. African American female

Mitchell
(he/him) A twenty-two-year-old programmer who has secrets of his own. He works at Pell, a well-known computer company. He is the only person of color there. He has been trying to create the next great technology since he was 17. Hispanic male

Rick
(he/him, 30s to 40s) JAYDA and BREA’s step-father. Abusive. A drunk. Any race male

(he/him, 40s+) Mitchell’s racist, money-hungry boss who will do anything to succeed. Caucasian.
