Local Theater Company, in partnership with Boulder Book Store, is thrilled to launch LocalREADS: A Community-wide Book Group, Performance and Talkback.
LocalREADS is a new initiative that encourages a community-wide reading of a book with complementary themes to Local’s current production.
Helen Thorpe’s “The Newcomers” has been chosen as the inaugural LocalREADS companion to Local Theater Company’s world premiere production of Wisdom From Everything, which begins performances at Dairy Arts Center on March 1.
It's easy to participate. Now through March 25, purchase “The Newcomers” at a 10% discount at Boulder Book Store, read it, and then attend the 4pm matinee of Wisdom From Everything on Sunday, March 18 at Dairy Arts Center. Stay after the show for a conversation with Helen Thorpe about her book, and our production. Tickets are on-sale for the special event. Click here to buy.
Thorpe’s recently released book “The Newcomers” uncovers the struggles of young immigrants at South High School in Denver. Her book “is a reminder that in an era of nativism, some Americans are still breaking down walls and nurturing newcomers, the seeds of the great American experiment,” writes Nina Burleigh in The New York Times.
“We are thrilled to host Helen for this special performance and conversation,” said Pesha Rudnick, artistic director of Local Theater Company. “In our production of Wisdom From Everything, we follow the journey of a 19-year-old Syrian woman seeking escape from the largest refugee camp in the world. Helen’s book is a reminder that right here in our community there are young immigrants and refugees who are overcoming tremendous obstacles every single day. Through LocalREADS, we hope to engage in real conversations with our audiences on how we can continue to be an inclusive, welcoming community.”
The book is now available at a discount at Boulder Book Store as part of this community reading initiative at a 10% discount.
